Every four years, the Prescribed Music List (PML) is updated/revised to add/delete music for Vocal Solo & Ensemble and Choral Concert & Sight Reading contests. The titles listed are an excellent way to learn more about the history of choral music, identify styles from different choral eras, and become familiar with numerous composers. This repertoire is suitable for any public performance - campus or district-wide and can be a valuable tool for teachers to enhance the vocal development of the students.
GRADES 1 - 5 are for choral selections (easy to difficult).
The reverse is true for the CLASS list in the solo/ensemble repertoire. Class 1 solos are the most difficult and are intended for advanced high school students. Thus, middle school teachers are encouraged to use the standard vocal repertoire books (Pathways of Songs, The Young Singer, etc.) and select pieces with an appropriate range for the students.
